Exhaust stroke: The exhaust gasses are removed through the open exhaust valve as the piston ascends and begins the process again.

Combustion stroke: The explosion of fuel launches the piston downward. In the process, it uncovers an exhaust vent and fuel inlet in the wall of the cylinder. These permit exhaust gasses out, and new air and fuel to be sucked in, respectively.

Compression stroke: As the piston climbs back up the chamber, it blocks off the exhaust vent and fuel inlet in order to apply pressure to the air/fuel mixture. After the spark plug ignites the air and fuel, the force from the combustion pushes the piston down again.
The 2 stroke engine is so much simpler because it does not need valve or a mechanism for regulating their open and closed states.
